Crabb, Hoffman tie for victory |
|
Following a spirited Tune-up Race June 25, the Fourth of July got off to a great start in winds gusting up to 20 miles per hour on July 2.
In the first race, Ki Hoffman (with Byron and Ari as crew) came in first, followed by Bob Crabb, Andy Nelson, Grant Moos, Tom Siqveland and Wendell Johnson (sailing W 25, Roberts‘ old boat).
But after taking on Becca Lundberg as a third crew member, Bob and Mariah Crabb captured first in the second race. After several lead changes, they narrowly edged out the Hoffman boat.
Similarly, Grant Moos (with Alex Lokken and Heather Hoffman as crew) just barely slid past Andy Nelson (with Michelle Nelson as crew) at the finish for third place. Tom Siqveland (with brother Bob as crew) came in fifth.
So for the regatta, Hoffman and Crabb tied for first, Nelson and Moos tied for second, and Siqveland was in third. |

The Ten Mile Lake Sailing Club season got off to a great start on Saturday, July 2, with six boats competing in west winds gusting between 15 and 20 miles per hour.
Ki Hoffman, with father Byron and daughter Ari won the first race, followed by Bob and Mariah Crabb, Andy and Michelle Nelson, Grant Moos (with Alex Lokken and Heather Hoffman), Tom and Bob Siqveland, and Kent Hoffman.
In the second race, following several lead changes and after picking up a third as crew (Becca Lundberg), Bob Crabb prevailed, followed by the Hoffman, Moos, Nelson and Siqveland boats.
Following the race, a season kickoff party was held at the Moos cabin that was attended by about 40 people, including the Putney and Lundberg families, and Karin (Lane) Arsin (an early sailor of classic wooden C boats).
Many thanks to our excellent Committee Boat crew: Ed “Pete” Crandall, Dick Staunton, Hannah Moos and Meredith Wardlaw.
And thanks also to Hannah Moos and Brad Putney for the fabulous photos they contributed from Saturday’s race. We hope to make some of the photos available later in the summer.
The next race is the Memorial Cup on July 16, followed by races every weekend through Aug. 6.
Don’t hesitate to call if you’re interested in crewing or attending one of our sailing clinics. We’ve had several new sailors out already this summer, including Lou Gogela and Alex Lokken.
See you on July 16. |

A total of 10 boats showed up for the 2011 Moxness Cup, traditionally the biggest sailboat race of the year on Ten Mile. There was so much excitement, in fact, that a sightseeing helicopter dropped in to take a closer look at the start -- perhaps at the impressive line-up of new or relatively new skippers.
Sara Olsen, Ari Hoffman and Charlie Moos were the fresh skippers who took to the course that started in light air and built throughout the afternoon into a solid southwest breeze with gusts up to 17 mph.
In the first race, Pete Roberts (with Rick Becher as crew) sailed to first place in Dread Pirate with some impressive downwind legs. He was followed by Grant Moos (with Jim “Big Daddy” Detweiler as crew), Andy Nelson (Oliver Ross), Bob Crabb (Mariah Crabb), Sara Olsen (Brad Putney), Tom Brandt (Lucas Brandt), Tom Siqveland (Bob Siqveland), Charlie Moos (Melissa Boigon), Geoff Cox and Ari Hoffman (Byron Hoffman).
As the wind picked up in the second race, so did the action. Sara Olsen flipped. So did Pete Roberts, who was in a tangle with Bob Crabb (who was penalized 100 points for failing to yield to Pete who had the right of way). Grant Moos sailed to first, followed by Andy Nelson, Tom Brandt, Bob Crabb,* Tom Siqveland, Ari Hoffman, Charlie Moos and Pete Roberts.
So for the Moxness Cup regatta, Grant Moos took first, followed by Andy Nelson and Tommy Brandt.
* Assessed a 100 point penalty. |

Dick Staunton's back with even more great Ten Mile Lake stuff: shirts, tumblers, belts and visors -- all with the distinctive TML burgee insignia. Dick has so much fine burgee merchandise, in fact, that he's considering converting his sauna into a retail boutique. The traditional TML burgees come in two sizes: 12" x 18" for $20 (good for boats) and 3'x5' for $100 (good for flag poles). These are high quality, laser-cut, machine-stiched 400-denier nylon (not silk screened) burgee flags. The stiching is UV protected, so the flags should last a good long time. The price just covers production and design costs. To order flags or see more merchandise, email Dick at
