Double Header This Weekend

Both the Moxness Cup and the End of the Summer races will be held this coming weekend, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, for the Moxness and Sunday, Aug. 8, at 10:30 a.m. for the End of the Summer race. The Moxness Cup was canceled on July 31 and Aug. 1 because of stormy weather on Saturday and lack of wind on Sunday. But we were able to put on a sailing clinic later in the afternoon on Sunday when the wind picked up. Congratulations to Mariah Crabb and her dad, Bob, for winning that time trial among four boats. Two more sailing clinics were held this week -- one in front of Dick Garbisch’s home on Tuesday and the pirate race on Wednesday that began off Brandt’s point. We also had several new faces involved in the clinics, including the Cox family (Geoff, Dave, Susan, Stephanie and Kevin); Sarah Bates; Ben, Daniel and Jake Brandt; Daryl Shelton; Oliver Ross; and Clayton (“who has been cool since he was 6”).

We’ll see you out on the lake this weekend.

'Sailing Week' begins Saturday

Then, sometime during the week, the first Ten Mile Lake Pirate Race will be held. Sailors will begin by sailing to the windward mark, where they will pick up a bottle containing a series of clues for how to complete the race. Knowledge of Ten Mile Lake geography and history will be a definite benefit.

The date and time of the race will be determined by the forecast and wind conditions because we anticipate there will be several beginning sailors on the course. Then, naturally, we’ll hold some kind of pirate party when the race is over.

The season will come to a close with the End of the Season race on Aug. 7. So we hope to see you out on the lake for what we hope will be one of the best weeks of sailing ever.

A blustery start

That left five boats for the start of two exciting races that featured several lead changes. Pete Roberts (TM23, with Martha Ross and David) won the first race in his new boat, Dread Pirate. Bob Crabb (TM5, with daughter Mariah and Raymond Stonacek) was second and Grant Moos (I88, with daughter Megan and Jim Detweiler) was third.

Byron Hoffman (sailing Pete’s old boat, 55, with Barry Tonning and Oliver Ross) were in fourth, followed by Andy Nelson (TM2, with Rick Becher) in fifth. (Two more boats were planning to race but the stiff breeze persuaded them otherwise.)

The second race was won by Bob Crabb, followed by Pete Roberts, Grant Moos, Andy Nelson and Byron Hoffman.

Special thanks are due to the Committee Boat (Jeff Manlove, Dick Staunton and Ed “Pete” Crandall) for helping the Pasley boat up, for towing the Siqveland boat home, and for rescuing the Roberts boat from crashing into the rocks while Pete fiddled with his sail.

A special commendation is also due to Dave Pasley and Alex Schmidt for driving all the way from Iowa just to sail in the race, and to Becca Lundberg for finding the Moos cabin and attending the kick-off party.

Becca and her friend, John, are welcome additions to the Ten Mile Lake sailing community. On Sunday, they served as instructors on one of four boats loaded with young sailors who participated in clinic.

In all, eight new or young sailors -- Rick Brown, Emily Brown, Mariah Crabb, Jim Detweiler, Megan Moos, Amy Robison, Martha Ross and Oliver Ross -- learned some sailing fundamentals during the clinic. The next clinic will be held Sunday, Aug. 1.

The next race will be held Saturday, July 17, at 1:30 p.m. Jim Reents (MaryAlice Ackerman’s husband) will be the celebrity Committee Boat starter.
